Applications due Jan. 27 for PATFA professional development stipends

Scholarship, travel, presentation of work – people who teach part-time in the University of Maine System frequently want to participate in such activities but face limited opportunities for help in paying their way.

The Michael Burke Professional Development Fund offers small stipends to help meet those needs. It is named for a longtime adjunct professor who launched the fund while serving as president of the Part-time Faculty Association of Maine (PATFA), Local 4593 of the American Federation of Teachers.

PATFA members in good standing are eligible to apply for individual stipends of up to $500. The stipend may be used for a variety of purposes. Each must involve professional development. This could involve registration for or travel to a professional meeting where you will present work; organizing or curating a public presentation of creative works; some other work related to your scholarship. The PATFA Executive Board will make the final decisions. The board members are not eligible to apply while serving.

Use the attached pdf to apply for a stipend for activity you plan in 2017. The deadline is Friday, Jan. 27, 2017. Decisions on applications will be sent by email by mid-February 2017.

Recipients must document their use of the funding and must agree to allow PATFA to announce their names and intended activities. The check will be issued retroactively; recipients will need to send receipts to: PATFA, 311 Belfast Hall, UMA-Bangor, 85 Texas Ave., Bangor ME 04401-4340.
